Doctrine and Marriage

Wednesday is the day when we consider the practical implications of doctrine. I have just finished, and been greatly blessed by, Dave Harvey's excellent book on marriage 'When Sinners Say I Do.' It's basic premise is that we need to be applying the Gospel to all areas of life on an ongoing basis and none more so than our marriages. To commend it to you I thought that I would give you some highlight quotes.

'The Gospel is the heart of the Bible. Everything in Scripture is either preparation for the Gospel, presentation of teh Gospel or participation in the Gospel.' 24

'Remember that God is at work in you, conforming you into a genuine, from the inside out example of Christ. A sober assessment of our sinful condition doesn't hinder that work, it celebrates it.' 43

'Forgiveness humbly sought and humbly given profoundly expresses the glory of God... because forgiveness is at the heart of the Gospel.' 113

'Repentance isn't ultimately about us at all. It's about God. It's becoming so aware of God, His character, what He has done, that we actively seek to turn from sin and pursue righteousness.' 128

And he includes a quality John Owen quote as well:
'There are two things suited to humble the soul of men, a due consideration of God, and then of ourselves. Of God, in His greatness, glory, holiness, power, majesty and authority; of ourselves in our mean, abject and sinful condition.'
